Bears

Bears

Bears are mammals that belong to the family Ursidae. They can be as small as four feet long and about 60 pounds (the sun bear) to as big as eight feet long and more than a thousand pounds (the polar bear). They’re found throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

They have nonretractable claws, short tails, and excellent sense of smell. They’re typically solitary, except for mothers with cubs. There are eight species: Asiatic black bears (also called moon bears), brown bears (which include grizzly bears), giant pandasNorth American black bearspolar bearssloth bearsspectacled bears (also called Andean bears), and sun bears.

On average, bears can live up to 25 years in the wild and 50 in captivity. Six species, including the polar bear and the giant panda, are included on the IUCN Red List as threatened or vulnerable.

Survival of the fattest

During winter, when food is scarce, most bears have an effective survival solution: hibernation, a physical state in which the heart rate, body temperature, metabolism, and respiration is lowered. Grizzly and black bears can go for 100 days or so without eating, drinking, urinating, or defecating. They live off a layer of fat that they build up during the summer and fall.

Female bears rouse during hibernation in their dens to give birth to up to four cubs. Giant pandas, which do not hibernate, usually give birth to just one cub. After a couple of months, the cubs are strong enough to totter out after their mother—except for sloth bear cubs, which hitch a ride on their mother’s back.

Bear diet

All bears are considered omnivores—and yes, they all love the taste of honey—but each species has a preferred diet. Polar mostly eat seals. American black bears love berries and insect larvae when they’re available, and giant pandas mainly eat bamboo, though they’ll also eat small animals. Despite their name, sloth bears are ferociously fast eaters, able to tear a hole in a termite mound, push their noses inside, and inhale a full meal in just a few seconds. Brown bears in Alaska gorge on spawning salmon, plucking them from the water or catching them right out of the air as they jump.

Threats

Among the biggest threats to all species of bears is habitat loss, especially from logging, agriculture, and growing human populations. Habitat loss reduces the amount of area bears have to hunt and means they’re increasingly coming into contact with humans, which can lead to human-wildlife conflict. Bears are killed out of concern for human safety or in retaliation for hunting livestock or crop-raiding.

Some species of bears, including Asiatic black bears and sun bears, are also threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. Bear bile, which is produced in the gall bladder, is an important ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. Asiatic black bears and sun bears may be poached for their gall bladders, paws, skins, and other parts. Sometimes American black bears are also targeted for the same reasons.

Climate change is also a significant threat, especially polar bears. They depend on finding seals on sea ice for their meals, and they’ll often pass the summer months without eating while they wait for ice to solidify. Melting sea ice poses an existential threat to polar bears.

Alabama vs. Auburn score

Alabama vs. Auburn score, takeaways: Tide stun Tigers with incredible last-chance TD to keep CFP hopes alive

One decade after the "Kick Six" broke the hearts of Alabama fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Tide returned the favor in the same corner of the end zone in what will forever be known as "Fourth-and-31." Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe's pass on fourth-and-goal from the 31-yard line landed in the waiting arms of Isiah Bond in the back corner of the end zone with 32 seconds to go in the game to save the No. 8 Crimson Tide from the brink of disaster as Alabama stormed back for a 27-24 win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

The miraculous play was the culmination of a wild sequence of events that nearly saw the one-loss Crimson Tide blow a golden opportunity in the red zone.

On second-and-goal from the 8-yard line, Alabama center Seth McLaughlin snapped the ball to an unprepared Milroe on second-and-goal from the 8 with under two minutes to play. Milroe recovered at the 26-yard line, however. The Tide signal-caller rolled left and all the way back to the right side on third-and-goal, crossed the line of scrimmage and tossed an incomplete pass with 43 seconds left. Despite the near-disaster, Milroe was able to snag a rabbit out of the hat with his late-game heroics.

Auburn appeared to have things in control when it held Alabama to three-and-out up four points with 4:48 to play. However, Koy Moore muffed the punt and Jihaad Campbell recovered at the Auburn 30-yard line. That kept alive what wound up being the game-winning drive as Alabama remains in the College Football Playoff hunt entering next weekend's SEC Championship Game against No. 1 Georgia.

  • The Crimson Tide were 6 of 17 on third down but 0 of 4 in the fourth-quarter. They were 2 of 2 on fourth down in the final quarter, however, with the touchdown pass from Milroe to Bond being the dagger.
  • Alabama's offensive line only gave up one sack to the Tigers, which is a departure from the norm. The Crimson Tide's offensive line had given up 3.46 sacks per game on the season and has been a big question mark throughout the year.
  • Auburn didn't call a running play on its first two touchdown drives as Demari Alston scored from 2 yards out and wide receiver Ja'Varrius Johnson scored from 12 yards out on an end around for the second. Johnson, who also caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Payton Thorne, is the first player to score a rushing and receiving touchdown in the Iron Bowl since 2005.
  • Milroe was credited with seven "big" plays through the air, which are considered plays of 20 or more yards. Those seven completions accounted for 200 of his 259 overall passing yards.

CBS Sports was with you throughout the game providing live updates, highlights and analysis. Keep it locked here as we will provide takeaways below shortly.

Alabama still needs College Football Playoff help

Alabama didn't need "style points" against Auburn in its quest for the College Football Playoff -- it just needed a win. The Iron Bowl is one of the wildest rivalries in the sport, and to get a win at Auburn's place after suffering so many heartbreaking defeats is more than enough to keep the Crimson Tide in the discussion. That theory will be tested on Tuesday when the CFP Selection Committee reveals its penultimate rankings heading into championship weekend.

However, the Crimson Tide still need help because it has a "Texas problem." The head-to-head, double-digit loss at home is more than enough to keep the Longhorns at least one spot ahead in the rankings if both finish with one loss. Sure, that would mean that Alabama will have a win over Georgia on its resume, but Texas would still have the better win in the eyes of the committee: the win in Week 2 over Alabama. That's how the committee operates.

Milroe with momentum going into the SEC title game

It's been a wild season for Alabama's offense, but especially so for the quarterback. Jalen Milroe struggled out of the gate, lost to Texas, was benched in Week 3 and developed into a dual-threat weapon who is riding high when it matters most. Milroe could have panicked on that wild sequence of events in the goal-to-go situation with under a minute left. Instead, he looked like his heart rate was in the low 60s, even when all looked lost on the fourth-and-goal from the 31-yard line.

That composure not only filters through the offense and the locker room, but further establishes Alabama's identity as the Tide head to Atlanta to take on two-time reigning national champion Georgia. Nothing Alabama will see against the Bulldogs will compare to what it went through on Saturday night on the Plains. Heck, we haven't seen anything like that in recent college football history, if ever.

The coaching staff and Milroe have already rekindled the spark that led to their marriage. It felt like coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and calling plays that didn't fit Milroe's strengths earlier this season. That has changed in a big way, and the two will embark on a honeymoon to Atlanta next weekend.

Thanksgiving 2023: Americans have a Thanksgiving feast, whose star attraction is turkey.

Millions of Americans mark Thanksgiving on November 23, Thursday, a time when the country witnesses its busiest travel period. The Thanksgiving holiday celebrates one of the country's founding myths and marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the last Thursday of November.

Thanksgiving History

The origins of Thanksgiving trace back to a 1621 feast hosted by a community of Protestant Puritans, now recognized as the Pilgrims, celebrating their inaugural bountiful harvest in the "New World."

After landing on the Mayflower in what is today Massachusetts the previous year, half died over the hard winter. The newcomers had to rely on help from Native American tribes or in some cases stole from them.

Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in the US in 1863, although harvest festivals were already traditional.

Thanksgiving Traditions

On Thanksgiving, Americans travel far and wide to spend the occasion with their immediate families. A family tradition for Thanksgiving is having a huge meal together around the dining table, something that has been familiarised across the world through Hollywood films and American sitcoms. People also watch a fame of football on television on this day.

In the 17th century, the first Thanksgiving meal had deer, corn and shellfish on the table. Nowadays, a Thanksgiving feast consists of the star attraction of turkey stuffed with mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, and a variety of pies, usually including apple and the seasonal pumpkin.

Also on TV is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Three hours long, it is said to be the world's biggest and is known for its huge balloons that are trailed between the skyscrapers of New York's Fifth Avenue.

Thanksgiving at White House

At White House, an annual tradition sees the US President ‘pardon’ a turkey, the centrepiece of most holiday tables, from the carving knife.

The origin of the pardoning tradition is unclear -- tales of spared turkeys date back to the 19th-century and the days of Abraham Lincoln whose son, the story goes, convinced him to let a bird live.

Classic Green Bean Casserole

 Classic Green Bean Casserole

This Green Bean Casserole recipe is a classic holiday side dish that needs just a few minutes of prep and can be made with fresh, frozen, or canned green beans.

A Classic Holiday Casserole

I love green bean casserole, it reminds me of holidays from my childhood. This is a version of Campbell’s green bean casserole developed by Dorcas Reilley in the test kitchen (although I do love my from-scratch version

 too)!

  • This dish needs only 5 minutes of prep time making this the easiest side dish ever.
  • Can be made ahead of time, placed in a baking dish, and baked just before serving.
  • Top with crispy onions or even a Panko mixed with butter and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
  • It’s perfect as a Thanksgiving side dish, for Easter or Christmas dinner but it’s also great alongside Sunday supper too.

Israel-Hamas war

Israel-Hamas war live: Gaza’s Indonesian Hospital surrounded by tanks

Indonesia condemns attack on hospital in Gaza

  • Israeli tanks surround Indonesian Hospital in Gaza where at least 12 people killed following direct Israeli strikes since the morning.
  • Gaza’s health ministry director dismissed Israel’s claim that it had found a Hamas tunnel at the al-Shifa Hospital, describing it as a “pure lie”.

Israeli attacks on Indonesian Hospital have now been condemned by Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi who said that it was “clear violation of international humanitarian laws”.

“All countries, especially those that have close relations with Israel, must use all their influence and capabilities to urge Israel to stop its atrocities,” Retno added.

At least 12 people have been killed in the attacks and Israeli tanks have surrounded the hospital.

No reaction from the international community on hospital attack

Ibrahim Fraihat, associate professor at the Doha Institute, tells Al Jazeera that there are two patterns emerging from Israel’s attacks on civilian facilities, the latest being Indonesian Hospital.

“We started with the al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. It was bombed, there was an outcry over this and Israel denied it. But then there was another attack and received with [no] reaction from the international community because they got used to it. Now, Israel is bombing hospitals and is not even giving an explanation,” he said.

Fraihat added that the second pattern that aligns with this are the schools in Gaza.

“The first school was also received with international condemnation, but then yesterday, Al Fakhoura school…even Israel is not claiming that there are Hamas fighters hiding there, bombed [and] killed 200 people and no explanation whatsoever.”

Bodies of those killed by Israel still lying outside Indonesian Hospital

We can now bring you some more updates on what’s happening at the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.

Munner al-Bursh, general manager of the Health Ministry in Gaza, has told Al Jazeera that:

  • Israeli forces are continuing to attack the hospital.
  • Israeli artillery started in the middle of the night and targeted the surgical department, wounding the doctors working there and killing 12 civilians who were taking refuge.
  • Israeli forces then targeted people who were leaving the hospital by shooting them near the hospital. Their bodies are still lying on the ground, and nobody has been able to bury them.
  • The al-Kuwait UN school was burned down by the Israeli forces. People were taking refuge there, and we don’t have any information on the death toll there.
  • In addition to around 700 patients and 5,000 refugees before the attack, there were 10,000 people in the shelter centres around the hospital.
  • We are using a small power generator that runs on vegetable oil, manufactured by some creative individuals who sacrificed some of their food supply to run the generator.

Argentina player ratings vs Uruguay

Argentina player ratings vs Uruguay: Lionel Messi can't save World Cup winners as Albiceleste fall to Uruguay for first loss in a year

It's been quite some time since Argentina felt this feeling. Just six days shy of one whole year, in fact. For the first time since their World Cup opener in Qatar, Lionel Messi and Argentina have tasted defeat.

It arrived at the hands of Uruguay, who stunned the Albiceleste, 2-0, at La Bombonera. Goals from Maxi Araujo and Darwin Nunez ultimately led to Argentina's demise, with those two being the first the team has conceded since the famous World Cup final against France.

It'll be a frustrating defeat for Argentina, who conceded the first goal from a bad giveaway. The second, Nunez's finish, came late with the team pushing, ending any hopes of a comeback.

In the grand scheme, this loss will likely mean little. Both Argentina and Uruguay are almost guaranteed to make it out of World Cup qualifying and onto the 2026 tournament. However, for the first time in a long while, Argentina have been shown to be beatable, which will leave plenty of other teams with a bit more hope than before with the Copa America right around the corner.

GOAL rates Argentina's players from La Bombonera...

Goalkeeper & Defence

Emiliano Martinez (6/10):

So long shutout streak. The opening goal was the first Martinez has allowed for Argentina since the World Cup final, which he'll be disappointed by, even if the defence did let him down.

Nicolas Tagliafico (6/10):

Steady as always. You can nitpick that he could have done more to help on the first goal, but Argentina were put into panic mode when Molina lost the ball.

Nicolas Otamendi (6/10):

Was solid enough, but did show some signs of his age in this one as he looked a bit off the pace at times.

Cristian Romero (7/10):

A very good performance from the Spurs defender, who did a bit of everything on the day.

Nahuel Molina (5/10):

A rough giveaway on the goal sequence, and that's something you just can't do at this level.

Modern Family dramatic baby girl character

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Joins 'Modern Family' as the New Lily

When viewers tune in for the new season of Modern Family, they’ll notice a new Lily in Cam and Mitchell’s house, a.k.a. 4-year-old actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.

Aubrey replaces Jaden and Ella Hiller, the identical twin girls who played Lily for the Emmy-winning sitcom‘s first two seasons. The reason for the re-casting, a show source tells PEOPLE, is because the Hiller twins didn’t enjoy acting. When they were required to be in scenes, they became agitated and unhappy.

In a nutshell, the girls just wanted to be kids, their mother, Michelle Hiller, tells PEOPLE.

“Ella and Jaden are enjoying new toddler adventures in swimming, dance, gymnastics, and rock climbing,” says Michelle. “They are happy with the freedom of being 3 [years old]!”

While Ella and Jaden are enjoying their early retirement, Aubrey is having a field day at her new job. The Santa Monica resident is comfortably adjusting to her new role as Cam and Mitchell’s adopted daughter, says the source.

Aubrey will also bring a new dimension to the character – lines. The previous actresses did not speak in their role, but the new Lily “has a lot of lines,” a show rep tells PEOPLE. “She’s adorable and fans are really going to like her.”

The new season of Modern Family kicks off Wednesday night on ABC.
